What PAT testing is and what it covers

PAT testing, or portable appliance testing, is a safety check on the plug-in electrical equipment in your property, from kettles and computers to power tools and extension leads.

A qualified electrician inspects each item, then tests it with a calibrated PAT machine to find hidden faults. Every appliance is labelled pass or fail and recorded on a certificate you keep.

With ACN, the same qualified electrician who tests your appliances can also fix any that fail before leaving.

PAT testing for every property type

PAT testing is not the same job in a rented flat as in a busy office. Here is how we approach the four premises we test most.

Why we beat a test-only PAT service

It comes down to whether your tester can also repair what fails.

Leaves the repair to you

A PAT-only tester records the fault, then the job stops.

Handles the repair for you

A full electrical contractor tests, then repairs and re-certifies it.

What PAT testing costs

As a market guide, PAT testing starts at a £40 to £60 call-out and rises with item count. For your exact price, get a quick quote.

Common PAT testing questions

The questions commercial clients ask before getting in touch, answered directly.
No, PAT testing is not a legal requirement in the UK. The law requires electrical equipment to be kept in a safe condition, but it does not name PAT testing or set a fixed interval. PAT is simply the recognised way to show your appliances are safe.
A failed appliance is labelled and should be taken out of use until it is repaired or replaced. Most testers stop at the label and leave the fix to you. Because ACN is a full electrical contractor, we repair or replace the item and re-certify it in the same visit.
PAT testing is not specifically named in law for private landlords, but you must keep the electrical appliances you supply safe, and PAT is the accepted way to prove it. Licensed HMOs usually require it as a licence condition. An EICR on the fixed wiring is separate and mandatory every five years.
PAT testing checks plug-in appliances, while an EICR checks the property's fixed wiring. An EICR is a mandatory five-yearly check for rented homes in England; PAT covers the portable equipment. They are two different jobs, and landlords often need both. As a full electrical contractor, we handle each.
A brand-new appliance is generally safe to use and does not need a full PAT test straight away. Good practice is a quick visual check before first use, then bringing it into your normal testing schedule. New equipment lowers the risk, though you still have a duty to keep it safe.
There is no legal interval for PAT testing. Frequency is risk-based: a power tool on a building site needs testing far more often than a lamp in an office. Many businesses test annually as a sensible default, and we can recommend a schedule to suit your equipment.
As a market guide, PAT testing runs from a £40 to £60 minimum call-out for a small job up to around £120 to £200 for a small office or shop, with the per-item rate dropping on larger jobs. We give you a fixed quote for your premises.
We cover Birmingham, the Black Country and the wider West Midlands, including Solihull, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Coventry. If your town is not on our list, ask, because we most likely cover it.
